I hate me to.

THIS error was intentional. For once. It's Tuesday, I slept through Monday. Give me a break. It's practically a Monday. Don't pick on me. =P

Ah yes, Democracy. One Person, One Vote.

The problem in the united states is that it's closer to 4-7 people, one vote, because a small percentage of the populous actually votes.

Election day needs to be a national holiday where your employers can't force you to work (and since teachers/professors can't work either, school is closed that day) so that we can all go out and vote. And if you don't vote, you get publicly mocked and smacked with a rotten fruit. Plus voting should be mandatory. (Like in australia -- or so I've heard).

I would have voted except work got in the way.

I know, I remember you having a history of doing that on purpose. Though the extra 'u' was definitely interesting.

I agree with you except the compulsory voting; It's my right to vote but it is equally my right to abstain (and I don't mean being too lazy to turn up at the polling booths, I mean abstain for a reason).

I was talking about "to." The "irreguardless" was simply my horrible, horrible spelling coming out twice in one day.

If elections are mandatory then you get idiots who don't give a damn Christmas Treeing the ballot. That's the last thing we need.

What we *do* need it to get people interested in politics. And I honestly don't have any ideas on how to bring that about.

But how do you make voting mandatory? What sort of compulsion do you put on people, and how do you check to make sure they vote (and that each ballot is cast only by the person it's intended for). I think we need to have an ABSTAIN option on every ballot form, or better yet, a block to choose to throw out both of the cantidates and start over from the primaries. Personally, i'm not too disappointed that people who don't care enough to vote don't have any say in how the country is run. The flip side, of course, is to make sure that everyone who DOES care gets the opportunity to vote.

"Well, gee, this guy has a nice nose, but I like the hair on this guy..."

So, yeah, I agree with Omni. Manditory elections will only lead to politicians who're more interested in getting a botox injection than actually making policies (as they're too disinterested in that as it is...).

Hmmm, in two minds about mandatory elections. (we have them here in Belgium BTW) Your point IS valid, but OTOH, forcibly dragging the couchpotatoes into voting offices might cause them to spend five minutes thinking about whom they're gonna vote for. Yes, they are stupid people, but you need to keep them involved as well, because a free and democratic country won't survive if its people don't care.

And that's kinda where the problem lies. How do you keep people interested in democracy (and therefore, keep everyone equally represented), if they just don't care? I honestly don't know.

To some poeple it's 'out of sight, out of mind', so more or less forcing them to go and vote does get it in their sight. Where you go from there...

should voting be a right, or a responsibility?

the way i see it, you have the right to decide who you would rather running the country, but you have the responsibility to get off your ass and get to a booth.

Even if you do get donkey voters, they end up in the minority, and you get more people making the choices they would be making if they had to.

i only pay enough attention to politics to figure out which guy is gonna fuck my ass the hardest, so i can not vote for him.

Nationwide. School. Civics. Program.

It's the only way.
