I am curious about everyone's veiw on whether New Orleans should be rebuilt or not. Also, if it were to be rebuilt, then should it be recreated or improved (the city itself, not just safety measures).

Honestly, there isn't much worth there being rebuilt. Small business owners are screwed. Shops have been destroyed by flooding and looting. Everything is covered in filth and decay.

A potential way to rebuild it has been suggested by lifyre, and it would make sense to do so now. Don't rebuild it below sea level and depend on a levee. Don't give it the chance of breaking. Rather, take down the levee's completely. Clean up the rubble, first, after bulldozing it all, of course, and make it an American Venice. People can still live there, but build on top of the water rather than under it.

They already have a problem with aligators, so just imagine what it would be like perma-flooded...

And in venice, the water is horribly toxic because every just dumps their wastewater (and other, more solid, wastes). I don't think the people of NO would show as much restraint. Heck, public urination is already a problem, as is removal of waste water.

So what do we do, then? Just build it underwater again and play out this scenario time and again? I don't think we should sink money into futile exploits and should put them into something else.

Build the new city away from the old. Rebuild the shipping and receiving aspects of the port in the old city, but for all that is right, don't build again below sea level, as this will happen again.

QFT.

This is something we have the power to prevent from happening again. Building it back where it was is just asking for more disaster, and more wasted taxpayers dollars.

Have a feeling many people will be too stubborn to relocate... whether just because their property happened to be in one of the unaffected regions or from other reasons.

It's already being rebuilt so the question is moot.

Did you know that Burger Kings in N'Orleans are offering a $6,000 new-hire sign-on bonus? I should move down there to end my perma-poverty

Bah rebuild it the way it was.

I mean it's not like everything is going to crash and burn before you are all horribly dead. So there will be noone alive to tell me "I told you so" and besides that I'll be dead too.

I myself like the idea of turning it into a Las Vegas-esque city. That way you can keep all the historic stuff, blow Marti Gra way out of proportion, and not have to worry about flooding, since you'd just be washing away a bunch of obsessive gamblers nobody will miss. If the casinos are worried about property damage, let them pay for better levies.
