Because physical attraction has to exist. Physical attraction is present in all forms of animal life.

Of course this doesn't rule out that fact that some people may be ATTRACTED to body hair or the chemical basis for attraction etc etc etc.

Some, yes. There are always some who are attracted to justabout anything you can name.
As the saying goes: There is porn of it. No exceptions.

There are two main considerations you have to make though. The first is what percentage of the local human population is attracted to whatever trait you are going to be flaunting? If it is smaller than the percentage repelled by the trait or attracted by the lack of this trait, you may wish to rethink your position.

The second question is this: what kind of person will be attracted by this trait or a lack thereof? Would you actually want the sort of mate this sort of thing attracts? Like me.

As for chemical signals, like pheromones, humans are largely dead to that stuff now our sense of smell has mostly atrophied. They may work for us... but only at a vastly reduced level.

However, it *does* still work, which is why I mentioned it.

And the kind of person I want to attract, along with a number of other people, is the kind of person who likes me rather how I'm wearing my body hair that week.

All such things are there to bait the trap, so to speak. They draw the potential mate in, catching their attention and getting them to actually think about you in a romantic or sexual manner. From there they will, hopefully, come to love the 'real' you and the relationship will continue without any of the previously mentioned frills.

Think of it this way: I may not be ugly to look at and I actually have a fair amount of personal charisma when dealing with someone face-to-face. The thing is that people will naturally think of me as a friend or entertainment or someone to get things done. People have trouble thinking of me as a potential romantic or sexual partner. What I have to do is break this pattern in perception.

What I do with wit and behavior and humor, others do with different grooming or dress or a whisp of perfume.

I do it by asking if someone would like to have sex, regardless of my state of shavery or dress. And I wear mans deoderant as a cautionary not stinking of sweat thing.

Aplplying social norms to things like this is all well and good but the fact is that some people will always be set apart from the 'attracting a mate by the way they look' thing.

I don't think it's fair 'asking' your mate-to-be to do what you won't. If I cared for the lass's hair, then I should've started taking care of my hair in the way the social norms are.
But I don't.
I don't know how it is over at your landmass, but here any kind of shaving above the neck is considered to be a gay thing (note: only for guys). As for me, well, I give my pit hair the same attention I give my head hair (I.E. shampoo).

I really hope you meant "below the neck". That would be very strange otherwise :o

It has less to do with social norms and more to do with showing a potential partner exactly how much they can enjoy being with you in a best case scenario. How charming a dining partner, how sexy in bed, how full of grace all around.

And just asking someone if they want to have sex might be fine if you are a woman. Enough men are whores (most of us) for that stratagy to work. But trust me when I say that sort of line doesn't work for us guys very often. For us its called sexual harassment.

I guess that fits under social norm. Somehow, I didn't think of that, and that's odd, since I only shave because I want to. o_O Sorry, onion

I shave my arm hair. I can't stand to be hairy, and even though my hair is blonde, my arms were still furry. But mostly, at least, here in the States, it's a preference thing, unless you look like Sasquatch.

For most women, I'm of the opinion that shaving is unnecessary. Armpit hair can sometimes even be a turnon. Leg hair: meh. Arm hair: wtf? Who would care?

Pubic hair, for practical purposes, is an exception. Trimming is acceptable, however.

Here here.

I've always been the hairiest kid on the block and gotten a lot of flack for it, even from my own mother. I've had a full beard and pubes since the age of eight, and people to tell me I should get checked for some kind of hideous condition, when it's all genetic. I have better things to do that immerse myself in dipilitory creams, because I am a talented, charming, worthwhile person and dog gone it, people like me.
If I could change the world, no one would give a shit about body hair and everyone would dress nicely. As it is, I do what I can (and want to): I hide what people generally don't want to see, and dress neatly overall, so people will be pleased to look at me.
That said, if more people stopped hating parts of the body that occur naturally and unharmfully, and started paying more attention to how attractive the completely optional body coverings are, the world would be a classier place.

1. No
2. Not really.
3. Hygiene should be a given: No.
4.Armpit hair is pret-ty crazy looking when its covered in oils and sweat. I have a practical solution available to both sexes the world over: Sleeves. I'll bet nobody thought of that.

Now, beards on girls and boys. If it's the soft upper shadow, it's very sexy. If it's a wiry half-assed tendril or a full grown forest, it's creepy. The former is lazy-looking and sort of sad, the latter is agressive and I want to know where a person's mouth is.

<shoonra> i have come up with a theory
<shoonra> and i think its worth testing
<shoonra> if a hairy girl will start dying her mostache and making funky designs on it (like they do with eyebrows) it could become a fad
<shoonra> and then not only would facial hair become acceptable but some girls might even draw it on.
<shoonra> we should get madonna in on this, i bet she has a real fuzz going there
<Impy> ...
<Impy> That's a scary theory, Shoons.
<shoonra> brilliant, you mean.
<Impy> Do I?
<Impy> Hmmm...
<Impy> No, I don't think I do.
<arwing> I bet you could get spools to do it shoons
<shoonra> you know, i was just thinking of pming her
<shoonra> i bet she can come up with really awesome designs too
<arwing> you know there is an active body hair on girls debate thread
<shoonra> oh?

:3nod:

and on to the subject at hand~

1) nope. well, maybe if it got long enough to curl but i never seen that on a girl...
2) nope.
3) no, but they need to be kept under control. i remember back in boot camp i saw this girl with hair to her knees. i always think back to it when i feel bad about my own hairyness >.>
4) yes. it just looks unclean. i could probably get used to it but theres no reason for me to do so.

in israel there are a lot of girls with relatively thick, black hairs in places most girls wouldnt want them. shaving your arms isnt that uncommon (for the love of god people, wax! shaving only makes matters worse :-?) but all in all nobody pays attention to that but the girls that do it. you know, the usual silliness.

i used to hate body hair with a passion. it really really bothered me on such a level that i wanted to have all of it (but my eyebrows) removed permenantly including the tiny hairs on places like my belly (that nobody can see but me). i also used to have the same problem with moles (right down to the tiniest beauty marks). this is obviously the fault of make up and photoshop warping almost every picture i was exposed to along with my mind, but it stayed with me for a very long time. this, of course, affected my view of everyone but me as well. it might even partially explain my infatuation with feminine bishounen back when i first got into yaoi (sooo far from it now) and androgyny in general.

luckily that is no longer the case. further inspection even revealed i find certain areas to be nastier when shaved.

ive always been too lazy to get rid of it all on a regular basis anyway :chef:

Well morally no, but aesthetically, if they want to be found more attractive to people who are dissuaded by arm hair then it's another habit to take up for beauty.

I didn't really like hairy arms on a girl I met once, but I think I was more put off by how huge she was. That and, she was wearing tons of makeup. I might possibly go for unshaven arms if it's a whole 'natural' thing, but when you're covered in weird colours I think might rub off on me with obviously plucked eyebrows, then why the hell don't you shave your arms too? It just doesn't make sense.

Sigh. Because it's their body, not yours, and they can do whatever they want.
