Just go in, take out the troops, and drop scads and scads of cash on 'em. If they don't like the US then, well... Meh.

Doesn't affect me in Canada much... :canada:

That's really not a bad idea. All of Iraq's neighbors have a vested interest in keeping the country stable. If we could stop threatening to attack some of them and ask the others to put their money where their mouth is, we have a chance of getting out of Iraq without another 800,000 people dying in a bloody ethnic cleansing. Buying off your enemies (and friends) is a time-honored diplomatic tradition dating back to ancient Egypt. It can't cost us any more in blood and treasure then we're already spending.

As a side benefit, as soon as the dominant parties in Iraq take over, they will exterpate Al Queda for us. None of them have a vested interest in a gang of Sunni fanatics whose only strength is their ability to irritate bloody-minded jingos in the United States.

A key point about Saddam: he had no grievance against the United States when we first invaded in '92. He had been a reasonably loyal "client" for some time and thought he had our permission to invade Kuwait. That's the way ignorant sociopathic dictators reason, unfortunately. Before and after Desert Storm, all he ever wanted from the United States was to be left alone to pursue his petty dreams of empire. He had no motivation to support terrorists who might make Americans angry and he killed violent religious freaks like the Al Quedans whenever he could get his hands on them. Any likely Iraqi successor government will follow the same policy if dealt with by a rational American administration.

Again, to reiterate for the third goddamn time, the Iraqi people need to grow the fuck up and stop killing each other everywhere. Look at how the Kurds have it up in Dohuk and other cities that they control. They don't even look like Iraq. They're clean, controlled, and seem more like a part of Turkey than third-world Iraq.

A police force can only do so much when the populace is tearing itself apart.

As far as soldiers being lousy investigators, I take that as something of an insult.

Sorry Rupert, they are ignoring it because:

1)It makes to much sense
2)I already mentioned it way back
3)and then they would have to actually acknowledge that personal responsibility means something.

When you have all that going against you... well... you will see.

No. People are ignoring it because telling people to grow up does not make them grow up. One cannot force growth, only encourage it, in any direction. It occurs from within or it never occurs.

Personal responsibility means nothing in America. Proof -> Geo. W. Bush, 'nuff said.

Telling an entire society to "grow up" doesn't really fall with the realm of rational discourse, either. It's meaningless snark. The 27,000,000 people in Iraq don't enjoy the benefits of a group mind and scolding them like they were a single small noisy child doen't advance the debate. You probably have a point in there about forcing Iraqi's to rule their own country--which they do, as they overwhelmingly want us to leave---but you need to couch it in terms applicable to a mid-sized nation fracturing into dozens of political factions some of which want to exterminate each other.

Yes, it is complicated.

"What *I* would've done if I was the U.S."

1) Border the big oilfields into a single territory
2) Give a name to that territory.
3) Give it independace, under a regiem puppetierd from the U.S.
4) Send troops to 'help maintain the peace' in said country.
4.1) Those troops do NOT enter Iraq, their job is to defend.
5) Swim in black gold.

The Iraqi people can go to whichever hell they believe in.

The Brits tried that. They failed.
The US tries that and the US will fail.
The US government should try following its own laws before imposing dictitorial laws elsewhere. Oh, they are imposing dictitorial laws ... at home.

Fortunately, that operation has been coming unglued over the last year. The constitutional crisis is slowly building week by week. Unfortunately, while we try to get our act together, hundreds of Iraqis keep dying uselessly. Some people in Washington are building up a hellacious debt of karma.
