Before I jump in and have some fun, I'd like to know any unspoken rules around here, namely,

A) Limit to powers
B) Limit to actions/post (I'm guessing 1, but I've seen a couple in one)

And another question...

what would be the approriate firepower/backup (in the form of heavily armed...n00bs, is the right phrase?) for someone with no special powers, because that is what I am thinking about.

So far I've got my guy wth odyarmor, helmet, and an MP5. Up against me: you guys.

I'm thinking I need a bit of backup -_-;;

One good thing: no matter how invincible you are, a couple of 9mm rounds will put you flat on your ass, long-lasting injury or no.

I believe all the rules are listed in Chris's RP thread. Of course, you know about that already.

Yes, yes, but I was hoping for some advice as well, being new to this area of the boards and all.

Well, so long as you outline your character, and it's not insanely powerful, you should be ok.

Van started a thread where you could outline your character I believe.

Just don't be pathetic about it, and you'll be ok.

Briareos (who doesn't swing by here often anymore) had a full backup team, with a history to back it up. I'd say that if you put together a quasi-document explaining yourself, and your history, with the classic black lines of censorship, it would fit your persona, and lend you an air of credibility.

References to literature and pop culture are also good for outlining powers and abilities, as well as personalities and motivations.

There is no limit to power... For the most part.

Its all in how you roleplay.

My powers, even though I only use some of them sporatically are as follows:

Shapeshifting
Rift Technology
Moderate Healing
Magic
Respawning
Clones
Mecha Technology
Second Identity (Manifested as Dark Keenspotter)
Multi-Billion Dollare Corporation that can make pretty much anything...

With all of that you could be a god.

However, I only go berserk god moder on n00bs in initiations.

other than that my abilities have a tendancy to backfire and all sorts of other fun stuff.

For example I've:

Shapeshifted in to the wrong thing
Rifted in the wrong thing
Been sucked in by a rift
Had a rift destroy my arm
Died over and over and over...
Made myself powerless multiple times
Had a clone go berserk
And in general foiled my own plans
I get drunk WAY too often

For any of you that have looked at the Table top RPG GURPS. To put this in perspective I have over 300 points worth of Disadvantages

Thats a lot. Trust me.

Just remember that no matter what it is:

A Gundam vs. A Smurf
T-Rex vs. A Dying Giraffe
The Deadites vs. Ash

Whatever it is, its an even playing field.

RP it that way,

Heh, I'd love to see a gungam going after a smurf! That would be hell funny.

Plus, the smurf would probably win.

Your damn right the Smurf would win!

The Gundam is at the disadvantage,

It should probably be said that in the vast majority of cases, roleplaying is easier with some kind of disadvantage. There are dozens to choose from. Humor is encouraged.

You'll find that most of the board denizens here have one, or several, and that they tend to act up at the worst possible time. This is intentional, as it makes it more fun for everybody involved.

(You'll see what my disadvantage is... sometime. The more observant of you might even have guessed it already, I've certainly dropped enough hints.)

What happened to Briareos, anyway? Did I scare him off when I melted his character and killed half his support team, or something?

Nah, he gave a reason somewhere on the boards.

I think it was a pre-existing condition acting up or something.

Alrighty then. I'm off to write up a legit sounding history. And I'm gonna mkae it sound cool.

And I'm gonna be a jew.

And, for a little change in mechanics, I'm gonna have 0 powers. Yep, just your average guy, and I'm probably gonna die horribly 1,000,000 times. But I'll enjoy it.

Sounds like you got it figured out, the best way to go about powers is something i picked up off of chris, slowly add powes as your post count increases

This is how i did it
100 posts- Jacket with deep pockets. (Right now i am the only one who can give these out since i have them tm'd)

300- Pocket in jacket leading to crib
(helps to get out of a sticky situation)

500- Gravity control
(My main power)

And I also have a few that pop up everyonce in a while or that was given to me

French Beer
(Healing affect with a hang over)

Nano Esper technol;ogy
( Given to me by TSC, he has that *tm'd*, Now i have elctricle capabilities)

Abilitie to change quickly
( When i change into an outfit i use the most common thing they would have to fight
ie: Boxer)

Your powers can make or brake you

Yes, powers often act as a decelerating force.
