Post subject:  Rae's Final Project: a GUIMUD

Ok, as you may know, this Network Bitch is also an Assembly Bitch. In particural, I am becoming fairly fluenent in x86 assembly language. Part of the class that I'm taking to learn this includes a final project that groups of 4 or 5 people work on. These projects are expected to use 480 by 640 VGA modes as well as have network support of some sort. Here is what I'm hoping to get approved for my project, and should the prof and TAs deny this, it will become a pet project of mine regardless (yes, I'm a masochist for wanting to code something like this in assembly, but what can I say, I like the language.)

Mutli-User-Dungeon W/ Graphical Interface

Designed much like the classic text MUDs, this MUD will still be text driven, but options (such as fighting, spell casting, preference menus, etc) will be integrated into the GUI surrounding the text window (much like an IRC chat client, only with more options.)
The world itself will also have a unique trait. Instead of declaring a player class at character creation, a player may choose to join a guild. The classic guilds (Mage, Fighter, etc) will be provided by the system and the administrators, but the players may opt to form new guilds (for example, should they wish to form an assassins' guild, which will not be initially offered, they may apply for a guild status) Each guilds leaders may petition the admins for new skills to be added after a period of time that guild members may learn after gaining a suffecient level.
The world will also be designed much like that of the anime .hack//SIGN, with fields of play, such as dungeons, cities, plains, etc. Periodically, the admins will introduce a new field to keep the game fresh, as well as modify or upgrade existing fields to include new quests/areas. To move from field to field, each character must use the access gates, many of which are centered at the main Field, the main city of the world. The world will also be based off of the book I am writing (check my sig for a link) but will be based in the past (about 11k years to be exact) during the height of the Mizahn empire (the main city will be Avalon, capital of Mizahn.)
Questions, comments, criticisms? Please be vocal. I am curious as to how many of you will be interested in playing this. I'm writing it in x86 assembly language, so it should run on anything but a mac once compiled (well...I'll find a way to compile a Linux version, since I'd like to be able to play it on my personal computer.)

Good enough for me. Never actually played any MUDs before. Might be interesting.

You know, you're not going to get many "no"s. The sort of people who don't play them would probably not be here in the first place. Oh well.

Sure, might as well join it. I'm in the same boat as Ghost, though.

Post subject:  Sweet!

I'm in. Was an avid and hardcore MUD player for years. Kinda stopped after my first and favorite got shut down a lil over a year ago. Haven't gotten into any new ones since because usually I can't stand the people. That wouldn't be a problem with Kyhm boardies though. Usually anyway.

Oh yeah, was looking for a place to mention this, as I hate starting new threads, but I came across a GUI MUD-type thing awhile back.

www.synthetic-reality.com

Click on Well of Souls. My girlfriend actually introduced me to it and we both still play on there every so often. It's not bad, you can customize your characters skin, and building new worlds for it looks pretty easy. Was thinkin of hookin someone here on it to build an Exploitation Now or Errant Story world.

Anyway, lemme know if ya need any suggestion help or whatever, I'm all for your idea and havin some boardies hop on Well of Souls. If nothing else, ya might be able to get a few ideas from it.

Oh, and feel free to PM me about Well of Souls, anyone that feels like checkin it out.

Sounds like fun. When do we start?

Well, the frame work probably won't be done until summer, and that would include the main city and one actual dungeon. Some mechanism's I'm considering BTW:

-Armor gives you a negative damage save, thus AC 10 means the first ten points of any hit don't matter a lick (I can't remember what game I'm stealing this from)

-Weapons, of course, will have a damage range like in Diablo 2

-PC generation will be via a survey: ie What race are you, gender, etc on basic stuff, then a questionaire (sorta like an online quiz) to decide which of the pre-generated characters you get (If your character was in a Japanese Cartoon, what would it be about)
-or-
I can just let them choose from the pregenerated PC classes, again like in Diablo2

-Character uniqueness comes from the guild(s) your join, depending on what guilds might allow mutliple membership. Leveling up will be in a fashion similar to D2, but you must return to your Guild House at each level to actually cash in the EXP points for the level.

-Treasure will be handled in an AD&D manner. IE, a 3 foot imp from hell won't suddenly drop a 6 foot claymore. Instead, monsters will have treasure types assigned to them and horde-holes that you need to discover after killing them. Some may have money on em, who knows.

-Myself and the other admins will actually old a petitioners' court on a regualr basis (perhaps weekly) where players can bitch about bugs, gameplay, or petition for guilds, skills, etc.

-The GUI itself will most likely look alot like IRC chat. (at least the different clients I've used). Most of the screen will be a text window, but to the side will be the simple overhead map showing you in the middle and your immediate surroundings, and option buttons to take you to other menus, ie your skills windows, system options menu, etc.

I'll put more up, gotta go for now.

In GHP year before last there were some grad student who were doing something exactly like this. A Graphical MUD. They let us take a test drive of the engine. We were fish in a tank. ^_^ I join up sure... Been dying to get back to MUDDing.

Well Ero, sadly, by how I plan on running it, if you can get a few other people who want to start the faggot-clown guild, and you can give the board of admins a good enough reason why they should allow it, you could, indeed, be the a faggot-clown.

Realistically speaking, tho, no. ;) Perhaps form a guild of people that is unofficially called the faggot clowns, perhaps. But, all new skills/classes/guilds kinda have to be programmed by me to be put in, so I reserve Secrutiy Council class veto power.

And as to the map, the current idea for the gui design will give you a minimap so you can see what's around you, and then I might be so kind as to give the option to view the field map in a seperate window. Depends how kind I am. Then again, I might decide not to and then allow certain guilds to create 'see the map' skills, who knows. A very large part of the game, as I said, will be shaped by the users in the game (even if I am big brother playing it some). And just because a guild already exists (IE a knights guild) doesn't mean another one can't be formed. If this becomes large, I fully expect there to be guild wars going on, seeing as PKing will only be illegal in the central sector of the main city. Oh well, back to ECE hmwk and designing.

To see what has gone before you:
The Realm
-GUI Mud
-p2p (free 30 day trials)
-Questing, guilds, different cities, whole nine
-Decent Combat System (controlled PKing)
-By and large, uninspired (if any) role playing
Furcadia
-GUI Mush
-Free (pay for prestige class)
-Semi Decent RP
-No Combat System
-Interesting Map developement system, players create their own dreams, with own mods inacted in them.

You should at least look at these two, as they seem to be relative to what you are trying to do. As far as I am concerned, i'll try anything once, and this seems like an interesting idea.

Well, I have a zMUD window with Realms of the Dragon open right now, in fact. Whether I'll be in on your GUI MUD, I do not know. Maybe.
