Okay, basically what I'm envisioning for this RP is something like early RT1, only not quite as light-hearted and with even more dysfunctional characters (well, dysfunctional from the perspective of society at large, anyway).

The RP will start at B. F. Skinner Memorial Sanitarium for Disturbed Paranormals - basically an asylum specifically designed for talents. As you can probably figure out by the title, the story will begin with a massive breakout of most of the patients, whereupon some of them (specifically the main characters in this RP) will form a loose alliance to evade capture while causing as much chaos as possible.

I will be playing Apotheosis, whose profile can be found here.

Anyway, anyone think this is a good idea?

[EDIT: This asylum is only for very extreme cases. Thus, your character should be fairly insane (think Rand/Madadric level madness) or at least be considered such by authority/society (Apotheosis, for example, is technically quite sane by most measures. He just chooses to do utterly depraved things).]

So if you're using an RT character and there are paranormals involved, will this RP be connected to the road trip timeline?

No. Probably not.

RT characters have been used in the past with similar backstories and similar events to Road Trip itself, but the universes themselves are self-contained.

Be that as it may, I'm either playing Morrie or Ghost 'Ver. 2', whose bios I shall write up later.

EDIT: Morrie's bio added.

Morrie Frieze
Mechanophiliac
Age: 16
Appearance: Redheaded, abnormally thin, hunched over and haunted red eyes.

Morrie is confused, to put it simply. She thinks she was born male, but about six years of her life are missing and nobody’s been able to find them; nobody is entirely sure whether she is even who she thinks she is. The psychologists at Skinner think it’s a classic case of trauma and Gender Dysphoria, but when it comes to Morrie no one’s really sure. Shock therapy, pills, psychoanalysis . . . it’s all a blank book when it comes to Morrie’s brain. It drives them almost mad themselves, especially because tied up in that big blank question mark is the drive behind Morrie’s frequent bursts of violence. The violence has no particular direction; it only means when she is caught in an episode, God help you if you’re slower, less agile, or less quick-thinking than her feral mind.
Making these problems doubly worse are Morrie’s abilities. Morrie is what her first psychologist termed a “mechanophiliac.” Anything mechanical—lamps, computers, MRI machines, and even graphing calculators—she can control: causing surges, frying hard drives, anything. She doesn’t have to touch the devices to make her power work, but touching a device will allow her to control it. Fortunately (or unfortunately) her power is limited to line of sight. She can only affect what she can see or has seen. She is completely incapacitated by a blindfold and straitjacket.
When she’s not under the influence of her episodes, Morrie is surprisingly softspoken, very rarely exhibiting any sort of anger or disagreement. It is her shame that her condition prevents her from being able to read the books she knows she craves. Also, her frequent violent episodes contribute to an almost constant state of depression and self-paranoia.
If she knows Apotheosis, then she would likely find comfort in his learned speech and gifted mind, since he represents the life she lost. Morrie grew up in a privileged home, that much is determined. Beyond that, nothing is set in stone.

(Mechanophiliac is a made-up word, as far as I know--and it is probably also improper derivation.)

Two queries:

    1. Do you want/need people to play the staff of the Sanitarium, dedicated to making these psychotic paras face justice (or at least bringing them back to where they cannot harm others) or were you just going to run them as Faceless NPCs? (Hordes of MiB, perhaps? ;-) )

    2. Regardless of your response to 1, would you mind if I pulled out a para whose powers are basically completely based on an existing character, namely Odo from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine? He's ([pedant]Ve's, really[/pedant]) a favorite of mine, and I've been looking for a chance to RP someone with his (vis) abilities for ages. This seems a vaguely appropriate opportunity, if y'all wouldn't mind. I can promise to be original in the application of the ability, at least, since it is a fairly open-ended, innovation-heavy one (shapeshifting).
Thanks, Icy, this might work out really well as a way for people to fill their appetite for RPing while we wait for the start of RT2. 8)

That would be okay, but I'd only want one or two people playing staff members, government agents, or other legally sane people. Chances are, considering BFSMS is designed specifically to handle paras, there will probably be quite a few guards, psychiatrists, etc. who are talents. However, I want this RP to concentrate primarily on the escapees.

Sure, stealing powers from somewhere else is no problem, as long as you have an original character with an interesting personality.

Yeah, hopefully this'll take off... though I'll admit I started this mainly as an excuse to test out Apo before RT2.

placeholder for when i think up a character i want to use.

I think i'll pick a mental ilness and build tyhe power up around that.

As for being RT-related...

i'd be fine with an alternate RT world, but i think we have enough writing creativity and ability on this board that we don't need to rely solely on the RT phenomenon.

Anyway, this is Icy's show, so it's his call, i am just a fellow player here.

EDIT-JADEN MARRAK

here's the first draft of my character, Jaden. i will edit again later to include the procedures the sanatarium uses to keep him under control. basically, it's the removal of all glass from the sanatarium, and anyone entering it. This includes glass light bulbs, ect. History isn't written yet because i'm waiting to see the shape and history of the world more.

NAME: Jaden Marrak
Age: 35
Appearance: Jaden is what they call a Stringbean. 6'4'' tall, a skinny, wiry man with large skinny hands. He is a gaunt looking man, who looks like he's seen too much, felt too much, and is all but burnt out. His watery green eyes often stare emotionlessly at whomever talks to him, and there seems to be little that gives the man any enjoyment in his confined life.

Personality: Jaden seems like a washed out person, like all the colour and life have been sucked out of him. This may be due mostly to him being in the Skinner institution for over 17 years, and having been the subject of their 'therapy' for all this time. The only think that gives the worn out man any joy, is his power, which sends him into a state of rapture every time he usues it.

Powers: Jaden can manipulate glass within a radius of 100 meters. He can alter it's shape, and move it telekinetically. he can sense it, whether it be in sight, or behind thick lead plate. if there is glass withing 100 meters of him, he knows it.

What he can not do is make the glass harder than it is, he still cannot make it pierce thick metal plate or anything that glass could not rodinarily do, and he can only give it the velocity that can be achieved by a bullet.

Weaknesses: Without any glass, Jaden may as well not have any power. he is fit, but he is just a normal human, physically.

EDIT: Made a character, need some feedback.

Name: Andy Greenfield
Age: 17

Appearance: A 5’4”, 140 lb white guy. He has grey eyes and shoulder length brown hair which he prefers to keep tied in a ponytail. Average in build, looks pretty unremarkable.

Ability: Andy is able to manipulate objects at an elemental level. He can break down or create chemical bonds and also change the structure of an object. He is limited mostly by the available resources and the requirement of contact with his hands. In his first test, he was able to convert a block of alloy into its component metals and then change the shape of the parts. He then reformed his restraints into a knife and stabbed the guard he was with before he was subdued. Testing has shown that he can perform this ability with most inorganic compounds yet seems to have trouble with anything that is or was once alive, with wood being a good example. In order to keep him restrained, his hands are bound in the middle of the room with a wooden frame.

File: Andy suffers from a severe temper and problems with violence. He has attempted to break out several times and has already managed to hospitalize many guards in the few months he’s been here. He can be triggered by most slight annoyances and will try to obliterate the cause of his frustration. He has problems dealing with stress. At one test, he was bombarded with stimuli and became frustrated at keeping track of everything. He became angry and quickly disassembled the equipment and created a solid dome from the ceramic tiles on the floor in order to isolate himself. During the few times that he was able to have a calm conversation, he has shown slightly above average intelligence yet seems to lack creativity with his ability. The doctors have been able to suppress the worst of his outbursts with medication but it seems to have little effect. Counseling also seems to have failed. Unless a way to control Andy is found, it is doubtful that he will ever be of use.

I think I'll play Melissa, Llachwen's past mortal form.

I'll clean up a bio and post it here.

Edit:
Name: Melissa Carson
Age: 13
Appearance: 4'11", frizzy brown hair with (natural) scarlet streaks, brown eyes, pale yellow-tan skin.

Power: Creation and manipulation of fire (light and heat). Power range: From a candle's flame to ~1000 degrees C (in lab tests), just about enough to make steel glow red. Her power stems from her emotional energy; the more energy, the more fire she can create, and vice versa. For example, when she's depressed, she can barely light a candle, but when she's really angry or upset, she can melt metal.

Personality: She was diagnosed as "avoidant" and "schizoid", but, judging by her occasional sudden, irrational mood swings, she seems to be merely suppressing her emotions, to be let out in frenzied bursts. Even in her mood swings, she doesn't seem to recognize her emotions, but other people nearby can always tell: when she's happy, her hair starts throwing sparks, and when she's angry, her eyes begin glowing a dangerous red, and the air around her begins heating up. The most cost-effective way they've found of dealing with her is to throw her into a steel cell interlaced with pipes of water as a coolant.
She forms crushes easily, but she never admits them. She distrusts all of the doctors and therapists around her, but has found a (very) few friends among the "crazies".

History:
Melissa had lived happily with her parents until she was 8, then a "suspicious accident" happened to her house (which also killed her parents) and her aunt got her and the insurance money. Auntie kept her locked in the attic for days on end; Melissa discovered and experimented cautiously with her power there. One day her aunt found out and, rather than let her aunt turn her over to the authorities, she burned down the entire house and killed her aunt in anger, then ran away. The police caught up to her and sent her to the Institute.

Okay, I'm working on a little background information post which should be done by this weekend. For now, I'll just give you a few important facts that you should keep in mind when writing your profiles.

This world is quite different than either RT-Earth or our Earth. It follows an alternate history diverging around 1975 or so. By 2005, which is when this RP begins, Earth is at war with a mysterious alien force. The war itself is being fought on the Earth colonies on Mars. The emergence of talents seems to be linked to these aliens somehow, since all paranormals* were born at or after the first and only alien visit to Earth (before the war).

*With one very special exception.

Another strange thing about the paras is that every single para is more or less insane in some way (or, to be perhaps more accurate, socially/morally/psychologically abnormal; Apotheosis' insanity, for example, is debatable). The government is desperate to use the paras in the war, but almost none of them are mentally stable enough to be trusted for combat. This is why the BFSMS was established - in order to attempt to "cure" the mental illnesses of the paras by any means possible. Their techniques tend to be extremely harsh, mainly because the goal is to make them docile enough that they'd follow orders, rather than actually turning them into psychologically healthy people.

One last thing to note: there is no known way to nullify a para's talents, via technology or other paras. Thus, when thinking up your charcter, it would be helpful if you also devised some way that the Sanitarium would be able to prevent the use of their powers. For example, Apotheosis is locked in a soundproof chamber without exposure to anything vaguely musical; his vocal chords have even been removed so that he cannot even hum.

No problems here. Morrie's been blindfolded and jacketed well enough her powers are useless. The walls're padded so she can't touch the steel floors and possibly--since they're not willing to risk it--mess with the Sanitarium's wiring. Anyone who goes into her cell is ordered to remove anything electronic, in case they come in contact with her. The only thing electronic is a very tiny video camera in the ceiling.

õ.Õ Intedestink... veddy intedestink. I look forward to reading the more detailed description.

Is the "very special exception" widely-known, or is that gonna be one of the Secrets That May Or May Not Be Unearthed?

Very cool idea. Broke through my inspiration block when I turned it around and started thinking that since I already knew what power I wanted, I might instead try to build the mental illness up around that. I'm quite happy with the results; many thanks!

Alright, here goes nothing. ::cracks knuckles:

Name: Lati (pronounced "lah-TIH" [latrine + Timothy])

Age: ??? (Likewise for height, eye/hair color, and [yes, you guessed it] gender. [Who, me predictable? Surely you jest! ;-) ] )

Weight: 186 lbs

Lati is a particularly odd duck, even among the residents of the BFSMS. Ve was discovered eight months ago [circumstances of this discovery to be determined] and <strike>experiments</strike> treatment procedures since then have revealed the following.

While ve lacked any ID and they have had no success discovering any leads on vis origin or history, this entity responds best to the name “Lati.”

Lati is capable of dissolving into a viscous amber liquid and reforming into just about any shape and/or material, with the following constraints: vis mass is conserved, ve cannot turn into energy, and ve can only alter vis density within a certain range (between that of a feather and most iron/steel). However, just about any substance can be duplicated, be it animal, vegetable, or mineral in nature, and ve is capable of a ridiculously precise level of detail (ve has perfectly duplicated the fingerprints of lab technicians after shaking their hands).
(NOTE: I know there was that one episode of ST:DS9 in which Laas turns into fog and a flame. Maybe Lati can do this, maybe ve can’t, but ve hasn’t thus far.)

Though presumably born human, today Lati does not seem to have any one natural form, or at least does not usually show any strong preference for one over another. [This will change as the story progresses, most likely.]

While Lati is sentient and has conscious control over vis shapeshifting abilities, vis mental state seems just as fluid as vis corporeal one, and the two are tightly linked. As one wise-ass put it, “This is the most mercurial patient I’ve ever had to deal with, in every sense of the word.”

When agitated, amused, or otherwise aroused to some strong emotion, Lati tends to change shape to one better able to express said emotion. Since ve is highly empathetic and suggestible (though not paranormally so), the emotional states of those around vim often set off what can appear to be wild mood swings.
Lati was contained within a seamless, airtight titanium globe between treatments. (As ve apparently does not metabolize oxygen [despite going through the motions of breathing], they were mercifully spared the headache of designing an escape-proof ventilation system.) Once they realized how easily vis moods could be manipulated, the Sanitarium’s staff simply arranged to have an exceptionally cheerful nurse present whenever they needed to feed vim or conduct further studies, and have thereby avoided a great deal of unpleasantness.

Now, when it comes to this character’s history and future playability, I’m going to ask for a little help from someone. Specifically, I feel like it would help to have another character who Lati has some kind of bond with in order to both
A) provide vim with a good motivation to stick with the escapees (since ve’s so easily distracted that otherwise ve might just wander off) and
B) ground vim with some sense of ‘self,’ which is otherwise sorely lacking.

I have a vision of some paranormal whose abilities are oriented around telepathy or some other form of mental influence which allows them to help stabilize Lati's otherwise too-mutable personality. Presumably they would have met and bonded with Lati prior to their incarceration, and both were captured at the same time. Since their separation, Lati has drifted off and forgotten much of who ve once was. However, since this other para has a vested interest in Lati (be it benevolently friendly or connivingly selfish) they will make a point of busting vim out of the BFSMS with them when they go. Upon being reunited with this person, Lati is reminded of who ve once was, and begins to develop a cohesive personality once again. Where we go from there remains to be seen.

If this is an idea that fires anyone else's imaginations, I'd be happy to work out their mutual backstories together and perhaps sketch out some possibilities for the future. If nobody's interested, I may just go ahead and play them both myself, but I'd rather have some actual interaction with an external voice since all of the ones inside my head already know each other far too well. ;-)

Well, I might as well join, because I just love paranormal RPs and the like. As for a character... hmm... ooh, this should work.

Quote:
-- B. F. Skinner Memorial Sanitarium for Disturbed Paranormals--
-- Patient Summary & Status for: Monday, November 24, 2003 --

--Memo--
Sorry about the late documents- this was supposed to be here yesterday, I know, but it shouldn't make a difference- thankfully, the handlers knew of his particular talents and were able to prevent him from doing anything that would get him, or us, into trouble. See to it that you read this carefully, it's important. This guy can cause big problems.

Oh, and my compliments on your new promotion!

--Patient Physical Information--
Name: Smith, Alex. This is NOT a real name.
Age: Probably 17 to 19. We're unsure at this time.
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 147lbs
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Blue
Blood Type: AB
Allergies/Medications: Currently unmedicated in all respects, as conventional medication has only worsened his condition. No known allergies.

--Patient Mental Information--
Known Mental Unbalances: Currently suffering from a fairly unique disorder that has been diagnosed as autism of some kind. He appears to be very withdrawn, and usually will not interact with people. Most of the time, he is content to just sit there and think. When he does talk, however, he acts in a simple manner despite his extremely high IQ. Seems to enjoy company, though he does not actively seek it.

--Patient Paranormal Information--
--CLASSIFIED--

'Smith', as we have come to call him since we do not know his actual name, has the somewhat unique power to, in effect, manipulate reality. It is theorized that this is some complex form of telekineses acting not on the normal visual level alone, but also on the subatomic level. Amazingly, he has been able to not only manipulate physical objects like most common talents with telekinetic powers, but on a few occasions has transmuted substances into wholly different elements. This would probably be a useful talent, however, he does not seem to use it much if at all. Perhaps if he were able to be withdrawn from his inner world, he would be willing to use his talents.

Currently, we're unsure how the power works or what its limits are, as he has proven unwilling to use his powers and in fact denies that he has any. However, he doesn't seem to be able to affect things he cannot see- thus, we keep him blindfolded most of the time. If he can truly cause subatomic changes, he would be able to wreak havoc on a human. It's better to be safe than sorry, after all.

--Recommendations--

Keep blindfolded, and have constant nurse assistance to help him maneuver. Will eat by himself, and does not require any medication. Really, he's totally safe, but then again we never know what might happen.

Well, if you'll allow me, I liked to use this character.

Name: Guy Jhonson
Height: 5
Age:13
Weight: 98
Hair: Black
Eyes: One red one black

Abilities: Guy can use his mind as away to get through a Dementia plane. He can quite literlly explore his own mind, in wich he keeps caged the monsters he brings back from the Demtia plane. He can jump extremly high distances, since he can jump into the Dementia plane, find a place to stand, and jump back out. The creatures he can summon are usually not under his control, but something about the summoning binds them to him so they are unable to harm him. They come out of his mouth in a very... disturbing, way.

Backstory: Guy was born into an average family. Driven insane by the monsters he summoned by the time he was four, he retreated into his mind where he could keep them caged.Once, though, one of them escaped and slaughtered his family. While several type of stimulants have been tried nothing has been able to drag him out of his stupor. Recently one of the more powerfull creatures in his mind has been tormenting him, trying to escape. His screams are heard throughout the day as he internally struggles with him.

Imprisoment: Keeping Guy undergaurd is not hard, in fact all you need is the normal precautions. By binding his mouth shut and tying his hands to keep him from opening it, theres no way any creatures can excape. Feeding him is dificult, since some creatures try to make a brake for it, but thankfully he has been able to subdue and control most of them, and has proven invaluble in his captivity. There has been only 1 accident, when a careless nurse got her hand bitten off by a mouth within his mouth while feeding him.

Name: Roland 'Necro' Steiner
Age: 23
Heighth 1 meter 60
Weight 50 kilogram
Hqir: Dirty blond
Eyes: Brown
Distinguishing Marks: Tattoos on face around the eyes

Power: Manipulation of all things dead, or absorbing life. He can raise corpses, drain life-energy from others, and has shown signs that he can converse with the dead and even summon ghosts. TO do so he needs to have both his hands free and be able to speak though: As he is pathetically weak, this means that while on his own, he can be easily subdued by a careful warden.

Personality: As one of the most diseased inmates of the Asylum, Rolans, or 'Necro' as he likes to be called is highly disturbing to be around. His temper can go from calmth, to hilarity to violence at any ti,e without warning. His main interested is the dead of course, and he engages in his 'hobby' with disturbing glee. He dislikes being touched though, and an physical contact is prone to sending him into bouts of rage. In his 'saner' moments, he broods about plans to cause death on gigantic scales.

EDIT: Oops. I totally forgot that I had joined this RP, and by the time I had remembered I didn't particularly like my character anymore. Fuck 'im, I'll do something different.

Wheee! Anyway, I've not really done this much before, so if you'd be so kind as to accompany all your clue-slaps with an explanation, I'd appreciate it.

Vital Statistics:
Name: Simon Kenton
Age: Mid-20's
H/W: 6'1", 160lb (1.85m, 70kg)
Hair: Red hair, blond streaked beard.
Eyes: greeny-brown.

Appearance: Generally strung out. He's tall and long limbed, but always looks like he hasn't eaten or slept in a while -- even when he has. He wears his hair long, but it seems to bush out in all directions instead of hanging down. When allowed a choice, he favors workman's clothes - overalls, boots, etc. This compliments his natural unobtrusiveness and he tends to pass by unnoticed.

Power: Simon is an electrokinetic. He can sense and, to some extent, manipulate electromagnetic fields. However, conservation of energy being what it is, he really can't generate fields the way Magneto does. Manipulation of existing fields can be done, but any power drawn out of them must be properly sunk to ground or Simon risks a nasty radiation burn. Drawing power from an external source is dangerous for the same reason, so he has not experimented much with that.

His sensory ability is more useful. Simon can sense the subtle electrical fields that make up thoughts in the human brain. He is limited by distance, interference and, sometimes, a kind of incompatibility between extremely dissimilar brains. He can't read memories, as they are in chemical storage. Only conscious thought.

Personality (Disorder): Paranoid Delusions, Multiple Personality Disorder.
Whether Simon's paranoia existed before his talents manifested is not known. The two are definite linked now, as his glances into others' minds fuel his mistrust.

At some point Simon's fears lead him to experiment, using his powers to alter the electrical flows in his own mind. He apparently had hoped to cure himself by building a stronger, more powerful, personality. Instead he somehow created a seperate sub-entity inside his own mind.

A creature of pure id, he keeps it subdued most of the time. However it always seems to escape whenever he gets a good buzz on. The Rum Demon, as he refers to it, is sometimes useful. Spending most of its time in the basement of his mind, it knows many things that Simon might have known but hadn't been paying enough attention to or had forgotten.

Containment: An excellent electronics engineer, Simon designed his own restraints -- a cranial PEC shielding ground-plane. Or as the Skinner orderlies have dubbed it, a tin-foil hat.

Icy, you should have a private message soon. I have a character, but I'd like you to see it before I post it on the boards. It's a very odd character... but, it could be quite interesting.
