In the book the Natural History of Weasels and Stoats, by Carolyn King, it is postulated that the main reason for an ermine's (Also called the short-tailed weasel) white winter coat is not for stealth, as the weasel would have no need of it:

If that's not pirately behavior I don't know what is. A ninja wouldn't bother with the toil of intimidation.

Pretty cool, huh? As a pirate, I can only approve of these findings.
