Speaking of cats, it looks like Meji actually misses her familiar. I guess she can't rain lightning bolts on Ian for fear of retribution. Although in this case, it might be a good idea to clear his mind of the cobwebs.
I'd almost say that Poe is moving the story into a wild west theme - with elves. I don't think that has been done before.
How about hot rodder elves in Los Angeles? That's still the Wild West. If you don't believe me, go visit Boyle Heights, Pico Rivera, or Silver Lake.

Guy at the warehouse where I used to work was anxious to get home and get married on the weekend. So he took off across the dockyard instead of taking the sidewalk and tried to jump a fence. His feet hooked the fence and he broke both his elbows. Got married and went on his honeymoon with both arms in casts shoulder to finger.
