I think it'd look better if it weren't being fed through whatever Photoshop filter you're using right now, since thinking, "oh, a Photoshop filter" detracts from all of the great design work that's lurking underneath.

Looks worse without the filters. They hide all the seams between the live action and CG and cover up small flaws, mostly in the textures and the low poly digital doubles.

While I would love to go totally photorealistic, is simply takes far too long in post, and it would require a MUCH more powerfull computer than I can afford. I already have Maya files that I can't even open anymore because I saved when I was too far into virtual memery and now I don't have enough RAM :(

I experemented with a lot of filters trying to preserve detail while still covering up those seams. What I finally settled on was a blend of two filters: the "Find Edges" filter, desaturated and applied as a color burn to a 10x resolution layer with the "Water Color" filter, then I play with the opacity over the original unfiltered image untill it looks right.

It's an imperfect solution, but it works.

Just a note, but I would say Sci Fi and fantasy arn't diametrically opposed, in fact the opposite: they're pretty much the same thing. As Arthur C Clarke once pointed out, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Intriguing, however the compositing leaves something to be desired.

Just in general? Or were there certain things that jumped out at you?

Science, by definition has a tendancy to work against myth, which by it's own defninition, is based on belief rather than evidence.

A blend of sci-fi and fantasy can work well, such as in Star Wars, but to pit the two against eachother while maintaining the familiar and individual identity of each genra is quite tricky.

Forgive my ignorance of the technical details - I'm not familiar with the terminology that goes alongside digital art (being an pencil & paper guy). The best way I can describe it is that the compositing is obvious in the same way the compositing of old blue-screens was obvious - there's a fine outline around the superimposed images that means they don't blend into the background the way one would expect.

Ah. That's actually intentional. It's the "find edges" effect, but I'll look for a way to make it visible, but less obvious.

Star wars is science fantasy, a driven film with an active plot (save the galaxy) based in space age 'world', Sci-fi tends to be more of a commentry on the effects of advanced or outlandish technology in society. Usually leading to some climactic sequence of events, but more based around the characters thoughts and emotions rather than their actions.

Kinda like how Blade runner is different to Natural city.

At least, thems my thoughts. Nice product though.

Star Wars is the quintessential fantasy:

"A farm boy takes up his fathers sword to rescue a princess held captive by a dark sorceror in an evil fortress."

It just takes place in a quazi futuristic setting.

I believe that's what they call "Space Opera".

So anyway, I've tried to reach some semblence of balance between the two genres by having the sci-fiers not dwell too much on technical details, and by having a consistent set of rules for how and why magic works for the fantasy side. Additionally, the sci-fiers have some lore and the fantasy siders have some tech, just to bleed the two together a bit so the vs scenario isn't so jarring.

No, it's Space Opera, like Buck Rogers. It's not really a hard concept to grasp.

Apparently it is, since you can't recognize I'm right.

I guess it's the overwhelming amount of sources you're bringing up to prove your argument.

It's a matter of oppinion. A nuance of perception. The division between "Space Opera" and "Fantasy" is not a broad one.

However, to say that anything can be inequivicably defined, is a misnomer at best.

That's why the answer on the quiz is rarely the option stating "always" or "never."

Take "Fight Club" or "They Might be Giants" for instance. In what category would you place them?
