Quote:
Speedy butterfly evolution astonishes scientists

A team of international researchers has found that butterflies on a South Pacific island quickly developed genetic defences when they faced extinction from a parasitic bacteria.

Their response to the attack was one of the fastest evolutionary changes ever observed.

Evolution is normally thought of as a process taking thousands of years, but the team behind this new research says the fightback of the Blue Moon Butterfly shows species can adapt in only five years.

In 2001, males had been so devastated by a bacteria that they accounted for just 1 per cent of the Blue Moon population on the island studied.

But by last year, the butterflies had developed a gene to keep the bacteria in check, and male numbers were up to about 40 per cent.

So, evolution or freak miracle from god?

extremely selective breeding. the 1% that were resistant to the bacteria were the only ones to reproduce, ensuring species-wide resistance.

At the rate butterflys get busy, shoudln't they "evolve" faster?

Think about a mayfly -- has a lifespan of 24 hours. I imagine those buggers could evolve like mad if they needed.

Adult mayflies live for a few hours to a couple days, before that they spend a year in water in their larval stage, much like butterflies have to be caterpillars for quite a while before they become reproductive adults.

I disprove evolution.
Every time I eat a Banana this man from the zoo tries to put me in a cage.

Does he need to shave or to shear? Some of the pics I've seen make me believe the latter.

Mutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward. :billnye:

Just more proof that humanity should breed its best and brightest as early and as often as possible while preventing the genetically unfit from corrupting the gene pool. Within ten generations we will have a society of true ubermenchen, physically fit, mentally giant, disease resistant, and smart enough to just nuke all the other fuckers on the planet and take their shit instead of playing games.

I volunteer for the first stage, naturally.

This is a good example of micro evolution/'adaptation' as compared to macro evolution. The butterfly in question developed a resistance to a disease. It didn't start walking upright and drinking beer.

you sure go to an awful lot of trouble just to create a masturbatory fantasy setting in which you might get laid

This is a good example of shit post/"logic" as compared to intelligent posting (STILL JUST A THEORY). The idiot in question recognizes that evolution occurs, but it tries to draw a false distinction between the imaginary concepts of macro- and micro-evolution.

If I had one, I would've now put a NSFW pic of a butterfly girl...
But I don't have one, so here's the next best thing:

Also, /r a NSFW pic of a butterfly girl. Maybe from another of Chocker's books.

P.S.
Eugenics for teh win.

All theories surrounding evolution or Creation are still just theories. You can gather a mountain of scientific proof for any one theory, and a good portion can be disproved in some manner. Not to mention the other side's going to ridicule it all anyway.

I'm not getting into the whole Evolution vs Creation debate, as I have better things to do. Like read porn. However, my point still stands: this incident is an example of the form of evolution Creationists (and some others) refer to as micro evolution. Even some Fundies (like my parents, for example) can agree upon the existence of adaptation.
