Currently still living in Nebraska, the Elemental Plane of Corn and Cows, after getting back from a short stint in one of those places that are designed to make Nebraska look good: New Jersey. Employment opportunities for the moment are basically nil but I am taking the opportunity to try for a bachelor's degree.

I now have a niece, an adorable little girl which I may or may not have mentioned around here before I left. She was born in 2007. Her grandparents (on the, eech, normal side of the family) keep getting her assorted girly-girl clothing and toys but I attempt to compensate by exposing her to gratuitous numbers of Warhammer 40k models that she now happily plays with for hours on end. Her favorite is a Bloodthirster of Khorne she calls Bob but she also has a liking for the Orks.

I'm down to precisely one pet rat, an ancient female who seems able to shrug off breast cancer like it was nothing. The lumps are each larger than her bloody head but, hell, if she doesn't actually mind tripping over her boobs who am I to go play euthanasia? I will say that one rat in a room with a dozen empty cages is... eerie. My niece thinks that one rat ate all the others.

Well, I have had a nephew for about half a year now. I'm trying my best to be the Cool Uncle. Only problem is that my brother is doing his post-doctorate in Canada, thus preventing me from ruining ENRICHING the kids life.

I just got back from some of the areas hit by the flooding up here. They weren't pretty.
A couple of hundred people were all around the place with the army guys cleaning up. It was amazing to see.

Actor.

Still in Alaska. Just got out my motorcycle, though a sprinkling of snow had me worried for a bit.

Need to get a scarf, or some neck protection, definitely, for next long ride.

A scarf won't protect you in the Mad Maxian post-apocalyptic future when the polar bears are chasing you in their offroad vehicles. Though you'll probably be safe from the threat of snow.

Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature in Buffalo, NY. (However, calling what I'm studying "literature" would be a bit misleading. The department I'm in is basically a continental philosophy department in disguise, so I mostly read stuff like Freud, Lacan, Deleuze, Derrida, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, etc. I've been through a full year of seminars and have read absolutely no fiction or poetry.)

I moved to Louisville, KY about 6 months ago. So much for being current.

I bleached my hair white, and I work in data recovery now.

Skjie and I are still married, still living on the west coast of Canada. He's got a way better job now and I am more than halfway through the teacher education program. In fact I'm here posting right now when I should be finishing a unit plan...

Mmmm... The sweet scent of procrastination. What level are you looking to be teaching at? Primary? Secondary? Tertiary? Remedial?
Also when are you both starting a six month diet of instant noodles to save money for a holiday in Australia?

(Unit plan is finished and sent off, now I'm procrastinating working on a journal about teaching ESL students)

I'm doing my practicum in grade 3, you don't really get any options where you sub/TOC but I generally prefer primary. And once Skjie and I both have Real Jobs then a trip to Australia will seem a lot less crazy!

Hmm, with primary school teaching in Canada, would you end up teaching a single class for a whole day in all subjects (which is what happens in primary schools in Australia) or do you have specialised subjects that you teach to multiple classes in one day (which is what happens in secondary schools in Australia)?
I have no idea regarding how teaching occurs internationally, but I was going to suggest that primary school teaching would be the more difficult, requiring remembering the syllabus for four or five subjects. Then I realised that while secondary teachers may, at least in my experience, teach only one or two different subjects, they end up teaching them across multiple year levels. Either way, respect, I've long since stopped being able to keep track of that many subjects simultaneously. Just remember to get your flu shots each year to help avoid catching plague from the children.

I guess both of you having real jobs would help avoid the instant noodle diet... Though I'm sure there's some saying about abstinence making the reward just that much better.

They don't generally break up the subjects until grade 7-ish around here, primary/elementary means being a jack-of-all-trades and teaching everything, potentially including music and phys ed (the only thing I don't have to teach this year is music). But primary doesn't include a lot of science or social studies and the math is pretty straightforward, so I still feel well within my depth. Grade 6 is where it would start to get problematic, the amount of 'stuff' they must learn in each year gets exponential. All of the upper-grade teachers in training are basically re-learning everything the kids need to learn just a few days ahead of teaching it to the kids!

I might actually get my first flu shot ever this year, just because of the teaching.

hmm... updates.

I moved to Louisville, KY about a year and a half ago. I might move again soon. I'm programming an indie game.

To my own continuing astonishment, I am also still here. I am still married to Poe, still doing the webcomic thing. We have acquired another cat. Poe's dad died on Christmas 2010, so I have spent more time in Alabama than anyone should have to trying to deal with his estate (which is way too fancy a word for a beat up old house, a few old cars, and 75 years of hoarding). I spent the last three months of 2011 in the hospital defying all expectations of my impending doom. I too have unlocked the niece achievement (by cheating and considering my good friends as family), she is two and a half, outgrowing four year old clothes, and made of pure concentrated stubborn, with the brains and creativity to make it scary. I adore her, and helpfully spoil her at the least opportunity. It's especially awesome when she invades Poe's personal space with all her sticky two year old affection.

^-^'
